The Best Time to Seed + Why?
Winter can be brutal and they leave our lawns less than desirable going into spring.
You may even say to yourself "I'm going to reseed my lawn this year the first chance I get.”
Spring seedings are to be avoided and we recommend seeding in the Fall
If you seed in spring it won’t have enough time to germinate before the harsh summer heat:
Unfortunately, in the springtime, the hot and dry season is just around the corner. Summer is the most difficult time for a lawn to thrive. Even a mature lawn can struggle with the intense heat we receive in this region.
The soil isn’t prepared for seeding :
The early spring and summer heat dries the soil making it more difficult for the seed to retain moisture and nutrients in the early stages of germination.
Spring seedings are prone to more weeds especially crabgrass:
If you seed in the spring you would have to forgo any crabgrass control for your lawn. The crabgrass treatment can’t tell the difference between desired grass seed and a crabgrass seed. This fact alone leads to a newly seeded lawn infested with weeds.
The fall season comes with a mix of warm soil and cool air, perfect for planting grass seed. This also allows time for the new grass seed to germinate and develop strong roots before winter. There are different approaches to seeding, and recommended services like aeration and dethatching but these should all be done in the fall.
