What is Core Aeration?

Core aeration is a type of lawn aeration where machinery removes “cores” of soil from a lawn. This process reduces soil compaction, making room for proper nutrients to penetrate through the soil.

We recommend aeration when seeding because it assists the seeding process in providing loosened soil for the seeds to germinate in. However, even when not applying new grass seed, aeration is still as important for the health of your existing lawn. Many will core aerate only when seeding leaving the soil compact and in need of additional seeding to achieve a thick healthy lawn.

What happens if I don’t core aerate my lawn?

Your lawn needs certain nutrients to penetrate the soil and if your lawn is too compacted, the grass will begin to turn brown and die.

Will core aeration ruin my existing grass?

The core aeration process will only pull up plugs of compacted soil. The cores that are removed are so small you will not have any noticeable “holes” in your lawn. These plugs that are pulled out of your lawn do not need to be raked into the lawn or picked up, they can simply be mowed into the lawn.

Remember this:

Core aeration is recommended every year for a healthy lawn.
